This picture doesn't adhere to the rule of thirds because of the vacant space in the upper right corner. If you divided this photograph into thirds horizontally and vertically, the place where the right vertical line and the upper horizontal line intersected wouldn't take place on a subject in the photograph.
The rule of thirds isnt about jamming everything into each "intersection", it is about putting the most important information into at least one of the intersections.
